Temporary Closure of Kalanggaman Island Due to COVID-19

Kalanggaman Island Temporary Closure

Kalanggaman Island has captured the hearts of many tourists, locally and internationally. And this not only limits for those who personally embrace its beauty with their own eyes by visiting the island itself but also to those who still plan to visit. Yes, who can say no when you browse a photo of someone enjoying its moment on a white sand beach? But what about this summer? What happens to our summer goal to this beautiful Island of Kalanggaman?

The Palompon Eco-tourism office had been receiving bookings from many beach enthusiasts. It has been a normal situation that the island is always on fully booked when we hit the summer in the Philippines every year since it marks a name in the tourism industry. We are not only talking about the tourist from the neighboring towns and other parts of the country, not to mention the balikbayan and international tourist but, also the locals who want to spend their moment under the heat of the sun and enjoy the beauty of the island. Can you imagine how many people are so excited to be there?

COVID-19 has taken the spotlight since the first quarter of 2020. But it didn't stop the people in booking and reserving their spot on this supposedly exciting summer of 2020. In the first week of March, the Palompon Eco-tourism office was still accepting different bookings. Until March 11, 2020, when WHO declared COVID-19 as a global pandemic and the cases in the Philippines, specifically in the NCR, increased. Then, DOH has declared Code Red (alert level 4) sub-level 2, which signifies local transmission. A day after, the president of the Philippines declared Community Quarantine in the NCR.

Because there was an urgent to impose and implement safety measures to prevent the transmission of the disease, on March 13, 2020, the municipal mayor of Palompon announced to the public the Temporary Closure of Kalanggaman Island.

As of the moment that we published this article, there is no update on when the Temporary Closure of the island will be lifted. The municipality of Palompon remains COVID-19 FREE and is currently under Modified General Community Quarantine until May 31, 2020.
